Benno Buehler

Benno Buehler is Economic Analyst in the Chief Economist Team of the European Commission. He joined the Commission in 2011. Before that, he advised clients on competition strategy with a leading international management consultancy.

Benno has worked on many aspects of competition policy. He was involved in a number of antitrust cases such as the Samsung and Motorola Standard Essential Patent cases as well in the on-going process of amending the Merger Regulation as regards Minority Shareholdings. He also participated in several high profile horizontal and non-horizontal mergers, such as Telenor/TeliaSonera, Orange/Jazztel, Telefónica DE/E-Plus, H3G/Orange, Google/Motorola, Glencore/Xstrata and UPM/Myllykoski. His experience covers a wide range of sectors, including (mobile) telecommunication and broadband, commodities and raw materials, paper, energy and transport. His academic work has been published in scientific journals such as the Journal of Industrial Economics or the European Economic Review.

Benno holds a PhD in Applied Microeconomics jointly from the University of Toulouse and from Ludwig-Maximilians University Munich. He is a native German speaker, and is fluent in English and French.
