National perspectives on the euro area

Monetary union is without doubt one of the most emblematic achievements of the European project. The sovereign debt crisis may have created doubts about the design or even the long-term viability of the Euro, but preparing and implementing the common currency has dominated the economic narrative of the continent for the past two decades.

Nevertheless, this narrative of monetary integration is in fact a cluster of different stories. Each country that adopts the Euro approaches the changeover with its own historical baggage, its own hopes and worries. Likewise, the post-adoption experiences of the now 19 member states who share the currency have been hugely diverse. Most recently, the creation of euro area bailout funds and the risk of a Greek default have led to an intense wave of political integration, which has brought difficult negotiations and the reemergence of historical tensions.

At this event we will have three different national perspectives on the euro area followed by an open debate.
