Christoph Schmidt

Chairman, German Council of Economic Experts,

Christoph M. Schmidt, the current Chairman of the Council, has been a member of the council since 2009. He is President of the Rheinisch-Westfälisch Institute for Economic Research (RWI) in Essen and Professor of Economic Policy and Applied Econometrics at the Ruhr University in Bochum.

Christoph M. Schmidt’s field of research is applied econometrics, most recently macroeconomic questions related to energy, health and labour market policy. He obtained his PhD from Princeton with a thesis entitled “Empirical Analyses of the German Labor Market:Unions, Unemployment and Wages”. In 1995 he completed his habilitation thesis in Munich on the topic “The Earnings Performance of Migrants in the German Labor Market”.

From 2011 to 2013 Christoph M. Schmidt was a member of the parliamentary commission “Growth, Prosperity, Quality of Life” which was appointed to investigate current views on prosperity and measures of wealth. He is joint editor of the “German Economic Review” and the “Journal of Population Economics”.

Christoph M. Schmidt was born in 1962 in Canberra, Australia, is married and has one son. He lives in Essen.
