Marta Torres-Gunfaus

Marta Torres-Gunfaus is senior researcher on climate and energy at IDDRI. Her responsibilities include bridging research and policy-making and quantitative analysis with social sciences disciplines. She is responsible for the management of the RIPPLES project, ensuring policy-relevance and impact on the ground for greater global mitigation ambition. Marta also contributes to the follow-up of the Deep Decarbonization Pathways Project, for which she will be leading the in-country policy dialogues work.

Marta Torres has 14 years of professional experience working in the field of climate change in public, private and academic sectors for different types of clients. She has extensive international experience leading and participating in large projects for governmental bodies such as several national administrations, the European Commission, the International Energy Agency, and the International Carbon Action Partnership. In addition she served as Head of Climate Mitigation for the Government of Catalonia (Spain). In 2013, Marta became co-Director of the MAPS Programme, a collaboration amongst developing countries employing over hundred experts to establish the evidence base for long term transition to robust economies that are carbon efficient. As independent senior policy analyst and senior associate to SQConsult, she has become adviser to different climate authorities.

Marta has been working on projects that focused on diverse aspects of international & domestic energy & climate policy design and economic evaluation, in particular she has extensively worked on formulation of mitigation goals and strategies, for example for the development of (I)NDCs. She has developed sound expertise on mitigation instruments, such as emission trading, voluntary programmes, NAMAs, sectoral targets and project-based mechanisms, along with a notable track record of MRV and accounting-related work. Based at the University of Cape Town, under MAPS, she advanced her know-how on policy- and decision-making, complex theories & policy implementation, and consolidated an international network of climate and development practitioners.
